What is the LCD?
Here is an LCD definition according to Wikipedia: A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical devices that use the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly, instead of using a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome.
And what is LED?
Here is a definition from Wikipedia: A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. And an LED display is a flat panel display that uses an array of light-emitting diodes as pixels to show videos or images.
Some clients are confused to choose the suitable type on some projects. They may pick the LCD while it is more suitable to use LED display, while in some cases, LCD is more suitable to be used.
Here is the difference between LCD and LED (The LCD here mainly is applied in commercial use, not home appliances or cell phones):
☛ The light-emitting principle of LED and LCD is different. Just as mentioned above, LED is composed of light-emitting diodes as pixels to show videos or photos, and the clarity is determined by the definition. LCD uses a backlight to produce images.
☛ The manufacturing process is different. Generally, LCD is supplied by some big companies, like Samsung, LG, BOE, etc.
☛ The requirement of clarity is different. For LED screen, it is suitable to be used in some cases which are not strict on the definition, while LCD is very perfect to be used in those need high definition.
☛ The screen area is different. An LED screen is generally used in big projects, like more than 10 square meters, while LCD is used in smaller size about several square meters.
☛ The charging unit is different. For the LED screen, it is calculated based on the square meter, while LCD is based on the piece.
☛ The splicing effect is different. There is no visible gap between two LED cabinets for an LED screen, while there is a visible gap between two pieces LCDs.
How to choose? LCD or LED? After knowing the difference between LCD and LED above, here are some points to choose a suitable type for your project:
- If the screen area is very small, we may say about 2 square meters, and requiring a UH-definition effect like 1920×1280 pixels, then LCD needs to be used.
- If the seamless display is required, then the LED screen is the choice. As now small pitch LED displays are applied widely, a competitively high resolution could be also achieved with an LED screen.
- If the viewing distance is far like about 3 meters above, then an LED screen could be used. If near distance like 2 meters is needed, then an LCD screen could be considered.
